Last week in a Hire Up blog post, we discussed the importance of “dressing for success” in relation to women. Now, it is time to talk about MEN!

First things first. When going on an interview, looking presentable is A MUST! From styled hair to polished shoes, it all counts when meeting your possible employer for the first time. If you are unsure of what to wear, do some research on the company. We found that it is effective to dress like you are a part of the company’s brand. Look at the company colors and wear clothes that don’t distract from that. You want to stand out by looking well put together, and still look like a part of the team before you actually are.

One thing that men find difficult is purchasing professional clothing at a low cost. There is a way around this. You don’t have to spend every penny you have to Dress For The Job You Want. There are plenty of stores out there that sell nice clothing at reasonable prices such as Ross, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory and many more. Big labels and names don’t always equate to quality and value.

Here are a few things to consider when dressing for the job you want:

Don’ts

No bling! Keep it simple and classy. No chains, earrings, or facial piercings.

Don’t wear jeans

Do not have your shirt unbuttoned

Don’t look over stylish

Do not wear a hat

Dos

Wear a well-fitting suit of a solid color (Darker colors)

Wear a long sleeved collared shirt (Light colors and go with the suit)

Make sure to find a nice belt to go with your suit

You can never go wrong with  “Classics”

One of the first things that we all learn when entering the work world is to “dress professionally” when going on an interview.

In an earlier Hire Up blog post we researched exactly how important this is to interviewers and found that IT ONE OF THE TOP THINGS EMPLOYERS LOOK AT when hiring.

The question is, what does “dress professionally” actually mean? And how do we know what is acceptable for each position?

Imagine you are selling your house. You must first make it look nice for anyone to consider purchasing it. You also want to look at the type of people that may be in the market for your house and stage according to how they might like their house to look. The same principal applies to interviews. You must look like you are dressed for the job you are applying for! You should match the brand of the company and look like you belong there.

Here are some tips to help you dress to get the job you want!

Research the company you are interviewing at. For example, if the company is a financial institution, we highly recommend not wearing shorts or open toed shoes. The idea is to look at the company’s brand, and try to not distract from it. If the company colors are blue and gray, wear colors like grays, whites, blacks, and blues. Look at what employees are wearing and dress somewhat similar.

Present a neat, clean, and organized appearance. As an interviewee, you are a potential representative of the company and should appear that way. Clean shoes, styled hair, and manicured nails are just a few things you can do to impress. Showing up with purple hair and facial piercings may steer the company’s opinion in the other direction.

Pay attention to accessories and DON’T OVER DO IT! It is easy to go from classy to cheezy in a matter of seconds. For an office job, simple and stylish is the desired look. For an artistic position, fun and colorful jewelry would be appropriate.

Are you able to remember how you felt after eating Thanksgiving Dinner? Did you feel Lethargic, tired, and unmotivated? Skip the Soda & Drink More Water

Most drinks we have available to us are full of junk. They have an abundance of sugar, chemicals, and other stuff your body really doesn’t want you to consume, and that will keep you steadily tipping the scale in the wrong direction. Even most fruit juices are loaded with sugar, and high in calories. Water is the most cleansing substance a person can consume. With all of the trends to do cleanses and detox regimens, most of us neglect the most abundant resource on our planet! Drink mostly water with every meal, and lots in between and you’ll feel revitalized.

Avoid Sugar & Read Labels

Everything we eat these days seems to have added sugar. Nearly anything that comes in a package has some form of sweetener in it and most of them have loads of the stuff! Sugar stimulates a surge of insulin that causes a hyperactive energy boost for a few minutes, which can seem great, but shortly after you will be in the midst of the sugar blues. Your energy crashes and you feel like you would rather take a nap than do any work.

Don’t Over Eat

You already know how you feel after a big meal. Once again you’ll be searching for a warm dark place to doze off, rather than get back to the project you were working on. Eat a good breakfast to hold you over to lunch, and eat just enough at lunch to hold you over to dinner. If you balance your meals you also won’t have the urge to snack throughout the day or a rumbling tummy distracting you.

Fresh Foods (Organic if possible)

Everyone knows we should be eating more fruits and vegetables. What they don’t know is how important it is. The majority of the population is deficient in one thing or another. If you don’t get the vitamins, minerals, or phytochemicals your body requires, it doesn’t function as well. You internal systems require a multitude off these micronutrients to conduct the thousands of tasks your body does every day. You can only get these micronutrients from fresh, whole foods.

Also, consider the conditions our meat comes from. I won’t go into detail, but the places they live, food they eat, and way they are slaughtered is absolutely terrible.  As a result the quality of the food is about the same. Eat free range and grass fed, and you will be doing yourself (and the world) a favor.

Quick Healthy Snack and Drink Ideas:

Carrots, apples, or celery with natural peanut or almond butter

Any and all fruits

Plain yogurt and honey

Dried fruit (unsweetened)

Raw nuts

Quick and easy salads with natural dressings or oil and vinegar

Avocado with lemon squeezed on it

Cucumbers with lime, salt, and chili powder

Green Tea (Iced or Hot) and sweetened with honey

Fresh squeezed juice

Homemade smoothies (No sugar added)

Looking for a job may seem simple, but when it comes to the interview, many applicants find this process to be a challenge. Most commonly, interviewees are nervous or unprepared which leads to the uncomfortable interview scenario. This involves shaking hands, a crack

ing voice, and the ever familiar uncomfortable silences after each interview question. At Hire Up Staffing, we are dedicated to helping our employees become more prepared for the interview process. We want you to avoid the uncomfortable interview and be confident in presenting who you are and what you stand for. The following tips will help you prepare and create The Perfect Interview to score your ideal job!

Keys to Success:

1. Doing research is a must! Knowing as much as possible about the company and position before the interview puts you in a power position. Not only will you seem very prepared, but you will also be able to converse in depth about the company.

How large is the company?

What products or services do they offer?

Who are their competitors?

Who do they rank in their market?

What is their financial situation?

2. Never show up late to an interview or first meeting of any sort. The saying “First impressions are everything” is so true in the business world. Just think of how many people could be potentially applying for the same job as you. Now think of how many of those applicants will be on time. By showing up late, no matter what your skill set, it is an almost guaranteed bump to the back of the resume stack or hire list.

Preparation Tips:

Plan everything out the day before.

Figure out how much travel time you will need.

Always have copies of your cover letter, resume, and reference list ready to go.

Show up to the interview 15 minutes early for good measure, and in case they need you to fill out paperwork before hand.

3. Ask lots of questions! As important as it is to know as much about the company as possible, it is equally as important to show interest in learning more about them.  After their rounds of questions, be sure to have a list of your own questions to ask them.

Questions to Ask:

What’s the biggest change your group has gone through in the last year? Does your group feel like the recession is over and things are getting better, or are things still pretty bleak? What’s the plan to handle either scenario?

If I get the job, how do I earn a “gold star” on my performance review? What are the key accomplishments you’d like to see in this role over the next year?

What’s your (or my future supervisor’s) leadership style?

How do sales / operations / technology / marketing / finance operate and how do they interface with other departments? (I.e., groups other than the one you’re interviewing for.)

4. One common question people forget to ask in interviews is the closing question at the end. Closing is one of the most important parts of the interview and can very well segue into the possibility of your second meeting. At the end, let the company know that you are very interested in the position. Then, ask the interviewer, “What is our    next step?” Ask for the interviewer’s direct phone number and the best time to follow up. This way, there are no loose ends and you know exactly what your next move should be.

5. Lastly, follow up with the company and/or interviewer. Send a thank you note within 24 hours of the meeting thanking them for taking the time to interview you. If a phone number was obtained during the interview, do not hesitate to call and inquire about the possibility of your employment.
