How important is a cool workspace to most people in America? If your answer was “very important” like mine was, we are way off. In an article found on Monster Worldwide Inc., studies showed that job seekers are more excited about the opportunity to work with people they admire professionally, among many other things. Only 3% of the people in that study were interested in having an “innovative office design.”
Mary Ellen Slayter, a career advice expert for Monster listed the three top concerns of employees that all come before innovative office:
Salary: Concern of pay outweighs office conditions dramatically. This one was an obvious answer, as to most people it is important to have a nice house more so than a nice office.
Benefits: Although everyone in the U.S. has “benefits” now with the new Obama Care Laws, employees find jobs that offer full or partially paid benefits to be more appealing than having a fancy space to work in daily.
Convenience: If you had the choice of driving 10 minutes to a basic office space or 40 minutes to an “innovative office”, which would you choose? The majority of all people chose convenience over cool.
Survey participants were asked, “Aside from salary, benefits and location, which of the following would most likely attract you to a new job?” International findings include:
- The opportunity to work in an industry I’m passionate about: 61 percent
- The opportunity to work with people I professionally admire: 17 percent
- A lively/energetic office environment: 13 percent
- The opportunity to work for an aspirational/”cool” brand: 6 percent
- An innovative office design: 3 percent
