Benefits of W2 Position over Self-Employment
Elisa Weathers
Director of Training & I.T.
April 2023
For many people, the idea of being their own boss and having complete control over their work schedule is a dream come true. However, there are some significant benefits to working in a W2 position over being self-employed. So, before you leave your salaried life behind here are some of the advantages of working in a W2 position:
- Steady Income: one of the biggest benefits of a W2 position is that you are guaranteed a regular income. This is not the case with self-employment, where you may have a slow month or two that could impact your earnings significantly. This means you have a steady and predictable income, which can help you plan your finances and budget more effectively.
- Benefits: most W2 positions come with benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off and other perks. These benefits can save you money and provide you with security and peace of mind. Health insurance for example, can be prohibitively expensive if you are purchasing it on your own. Retirement plans are also important as they provide a way to save for your future and ensure financial security in your later years. Paid time off should never be overlooked as this is another benefit that can make a big difference in your quality of life, as it provides you with the opportunity to take a break from work and recharge your batteries.
- Less Risk: when you’re self-employed, you bear all the risk of your business. If you don’t have enough clients, you may not have enough income to cover your expenses. In a W2 position, your employer takes on the risk of the business and you have a guaranteed income. You can rely on your employer to provide you with steady work, and if there are any issues you have legal protection and can potentially receive unemployment benefits. In contrast, self-employment can be unpredictable and there is no guarantee that you will always have work. If your business hits a rough patch, you may find yourself struggling to make ends meet.
- Employer Support: as an employee, you have the support of your employer. If you have questions or need help with a task, you can turn to your supervisor or colleagues for guidance. This support can help you grow and develop in your career.
- Training & Development: employers often invest in training and development opportunities for their employees to help you learn new skills and advance in your career. This can be valuable in building your resume and making you more marketable in the job market. As a self-employed individual, you may not have access to the same training opportunities, and you may need to spend your own time and money to improve your skills.
- Consistent Schedule: having a good work-life balance means being able to allocate time and energy between work and other aspects of life, such as family, hobbies, and social activities. This can help reduce stress and increase overall well-being.
Overall, working in a W2 position has many benefits over being self-employed. While being your own boss may seem appealing, the stability, benefits and support that come with a W2 position can provide you with security and peace of mind.

How to Prove You Deserve the Job When You Don’t Have Direct Experience
Lauren Milam
Vice President of the West Coast
Hire Up Staffing
There are endless opportunities in today’s job market, however, some job seekers may feel frustrated when the jobs that most interest them do not line up exactly with past experience. From a recruiter’s point of view, your best advice when faced with this challenge is to get creative and stay vigilant. Follow along for ways to flex your creativity and persistence to land that job!
1. Be Realistic: It is important when applying for a new position that you remain reasonable. If the job posting lists a mandatory degree in a particular field and you do not have that, move along. Do not waste your time and efforts applying for a role that expects minimum requirements that you do not possess.
2. Transferrable Skills vs Direct Experience: When you do come along a job that could be a fit but you do not have “direct experience,” review the job requirements and consider your experience. Think about how your experience may offer transferrable skills. For instance, if you have worked as a server and bartender and are thinking about applying for a recruiting position, consider the skills used as a server/bartender and how they would support the needs of the recruiting role. To be effective in both positions, you would need strong customer service skills, the ability to multi-task, remember the needs of your clients/customers, and work well under-pressure, to name a few.
3. Update Your Resume to Reflect Transferrable Skills: Once you have identified a strong list of transferrable skills, ensure your resume reflects it. Throughout your resume, you want to highlight your experience in a way that showcases these shared skills. For instance, using the previous example, your experience as a server/bartender might state:
“Delivered exceptional service skills while serving 6-8 tables at once,” and/or
“Selected to sit in on interviews for new servers,”
“As Lead Bartender, responsible for training barbacks to effectively set up and break down,
clean and polish, stock and restock to maintain the bar.”
Expand on transferrable skills throughout your resume. Help the recruiter or hiring manager see the likeness between your current and past roles and the one for which you are applying.
4. Recharge Your Cover Letter. In addition to updating your resume to showcase transferrable skills, do the same with your cover letter. Your cover letter and resume should be as specific as possible to the needs and requirements of the job for which you are applying. Your cover letter is a great way to speak to your past experience and how you see a direct correlation to the new job you are seeking.
5. Be Proactive. After applying, reach out to the company directly. There are several ways to do this: You can call and ask to speak to the hiring manager; You can send the hiring manager a message on LinkedIn; Depending on the industry, you may be able to stop by the location in person and ask to speak to the hiring manager and introduce yourself. When job searching, being proactive and showing you are eager can help you to land a job. Organizations want employees who are excited to work for them!
6. Prepare for the Interview. Once you have landed an interview, study up! Ensure your transferrable skills are top of mind and that you have identified examples to share during your time with the hiring manager. In addition to being ready to speak about your transferrable experience, you also want to be ready to tie together even more for them by knowing as much as you can about the company. Do your homework and find as many connections as you can with your experience and what you bring to a job. Research what that organization values and offers its customers and consider how past work experience and/or your personal values can further support them with those efforts.
7. Be Confident. If you have tailored your resume and cover letter as outlined above, and have done your homework on the organization, you are already ahead of the game when it comes to manifesting your internal confidence. You know what you bring to the table, and you have a good idea of what the company is looking for, now all you need to do is show the hiring manager how well these two things complement each other. Cool confidence goes a long way in an interview.
Through your research, you may have identified some aspects of the job that you do not direct experience or transferrable skills. That is ok. During the interview, you want to demonstrate that you have past experience with quickly adapting, learning new things, and that you remain open and willing to growing your skills.
8. Ask Questions. Prepare a few questions you would like to ask the Hiring Manager about the role and/or the company. Perhaps one is, “What would you say are the most important traits of an ideal candidate for this role?” Then remember what they share. If your questions are toward the end of the interview, you may not be able to reinforce the ways in which you can connect past experience to these desired traits, however, you can in your follow up communication.
9. Follow Up. Your actions after an interview can further reinforce what you brought to your interview. Show your gratitude for their time with a thank you email or note. Reinforce 2-3 specific ways you can help support the organization, or even better, if you are able to identify a few of those specific traits the Hiring Manager shared with you, tie those into your note.
Above all, Hiring Managers in organizations around the country are all looking for similar things. If you take the time to tailor your resume and cover letter to showcase how their needs are in line with your past and present work, you are already leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. By taking the time to research and connect their needs with your work, you show an eagerness and serious interest.
Think about this process of attaining your new job as though it is your current job. Put the same effort and care into your search as you plan to provide within your new position. Excitement, eagerness, and interest shines! Do your best to shine and spark the interest of the hiring manager.

Big Hearts and Generous Pockets Raise Money for Central Valley’s Specialized Medical Care
If you are familiar with Hire Up Staffing Services, then you may already know our President, Rebecca Kirkman. As the owner of a top staffing agency, Rebecca utilizes her innate gift of bringing people and resources together to help others build stronger businesses and better lives. Rebecca genuinely cares about the communities in which our organization serves, and with offices all over the United States, she cares—a lot. However, she holds a special place in her heart for the community she calls home, which is the Central Valley.
Rebecca Kirkman and a group of ladies that share the same passion for giving back to the community established the Founders Club. This network of talented professionals from across California’s Central Valley work together to elevate the wellbeing and health of our community through the active service of philanthropy. Founders Club members give generously of their time, resources, and talents to support Community Health System and its mission to provide the highest level of care to all its patients, regardless of their ability to pay.
Community Health System’s story started back in 1897, when Celia Burnett, proprietor of the only successful boarding house in Fresno, earned a reputation for nursing ill travelers back to health. Several local physicians partnered with Celia, creating Fresno’s first private hospital, then named after Ms. Celia, Burnett Sanitarium. In 1945, the medial facility became known as Fresno Community Hospital, and the non-profit organization has since been renamed Community Health System.
While the Founders Club origination story doesn’t date back as far as the hospital, this group has already earned a reputation for creating positive change. In the just over a year since being established, Founders Club has proudly raised $400,000. These funds have gone toward the Club’s current philanthropic focus, which is the building of the Bob Smittcamp Neuroscience Institute. This specialized treatment center is where patients will get the brain and spine treatment they need, right here in the Central Valley, eliminating patients and their families from having to travel outside of the area for specialized care.
The neuroscience cause is personal to many members of the Founders Club, as they have loved ones who have experienced neurological-related medical issues including stroke, head injuries, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s. There is a need for more neurological resources within the Central Valley, and Rebecca is doing what she does best, which is bringing people and resources together to make positive change. Want to learn more?
To learn more about the impact neurological disorders can have on the body, visit Community Medical Center’s website and watch several inspiring stories of Central Valley patients affected here.
Looking for ways you too could support the Founders Club’s fundraising work to bring more neuroscience specialists to the Valley?
- Consider sponsoring a table at the upcoming black-tie optional event, Fire and Ice, on March 25, 2023. This evening with the Founders Club will bring together community leaders and philanthropists for a night dedicated to supporting Community Health System and the future Bob Smittcamp Family Neuroscience Institute.
Want to skip the event and donate directly through the Founders Club via the Community Health Systems website?
- Visit here and select to donate through Rebecca’s team or any of the other Founders Club members.
Join the Founders Club in leading positive change. Raising awareness of this cause will assist with meeting the financial need to bring additional neuroscience treatment to the Central Valley. This rewarding opportunity is open to anyone able to give, and the donations through the website do not hold any minimum requirements, meaning any dollar amount helps. Help Rebecca and the Founders Club meet their goal, which is ultimately to elevate the service and wellbeing of our community.
