Giving Your Body Nourishment Beyond Food

All that we consider today as nutrition is really just a secondary source of energy.

Think back to a time when you were passionately in love. Everything was exciting. Colors were vivid. You were floating on air, gazing into your lover’s eyes. Your lover’s touch and your shared feelings of exhilaration were enough to sustain you. You forgot about food and were high on life.

Remember a time when you were deeply involved in an exciting project. You believed in what you were doing and felt confident and stimulated. Time seemed to stop. The outside world faded away. You didn’t feel the need to eat. Someone had to come by and remind you.

Imagine children playing outside with friends. At dinnertime the mother reminds the children, “Time to come in and eat.” “No mommy, I’m not hungry yet,” they respond. At the dinner table, the mother feels that her role is to enforce the rules of good nutrition and instructs the children to eat their food. Eventually, the children force down a minimally acceptable amount of food and rush out again to play. At the end of the day, the kids return, exhausted, and go to sleep without thinking about food at all.

As children, we all lived on primary food. The same as when deeply in love, or working passionately on a project. The fun, excitement and love of daily life have the power to feed us so that food becomes secondary.

Now think of a time when you were depressed, or your self-esteem was low; you were starving for primary food. No amount of secondary food would do. You ate as much as you wanted, but you never felt satisfied. Even in good times when we come home at night, we often look into the refrigerator for something to eat, when all we really want is a hug or someone to talk to.

Primary foods feed us, but they don’t come on a plate. Elements such as a meaningful spiritual practice, an inspiring career, regular and enjoyable physical activity and honest and open relationships that feed your soul and your hunger for living all constitute primary food.

The more primary food we receive, the less we depend upon secondary foods. The opposite is also true. The more we fill ourselves with secondary foods, the less we are able to receive the primary foods of life.

Every spiritual tradition encourages people to fast during the year so that individuals have time to reduce secondary foods, thus allowing for a greater awareness of primary food.

Please take the time to explore your primary foods as you journey through this program.

The Beauty of the Temporary Job

So you’ve been looking for some direction in your life and you think that picking a career will bring just that. The problem is you have no idea what that perfect career is and you’re having a hard time getting started on your path. Now where can you go to figure this all out? That’s right, to a staffing agency.

With the temporary jobs a staffing agency provides you will have the potential opportunity to try out different jobs to get an idea of what suits you best. Imagine you are looking for a job in retail service and you pour through the ads and finally land an interview. You nail the first one but the second interview isn’t for a week and after that the company asks you to come back the following Monday to meet the owner for the final approval. You have nearly three weeks invested in the hiring process, not to mention the time it took you to get the interview. You finally get started but after a few weeks you realize that this retail stuff isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and it just isn’t for you.

At this point you might just wish you had a chance to go back to the drawing board and try a new field of work, but you have so much invested in the process that you just stick with your boring new job and never end up finding what you were looking for. Now, while this may be slightly over dramatized it isn’t exactly science fiction.

Now imagine a different scenario, where you’re hired for a temporary job with a staffing agency. The first temp job you are given is a total dud and just doesn’t work for you. The great thing is that you are being pulled out in a few weeks when the job is through. After the dud you’re assigned to a different job in a different field and things just start to click. You love the environment, you believe in what you’re doing, and you’re happy to be going to work rather than dreading the alarm clock telling you it’s time to get up and clock in. Now you have the opportunity to stand out and attempt to make this position permanent. Even if it doesn’t happen, you know what you want, and you definitely know what you don’t want. You have the direction you were looking for and now you can put together a game plan to go out and get that career you so desire.

Smoothies Replace Boring Diet Snacks!

Are you tired of eating boring healthy diet snacks? I have great news for you! Smoothies can help you lose weight! If the smoothie contains certain ingredients, it can be the perfect snack while at the same time assisting in the weight loss and detoxification process. I have come up with a delicious recipe or guide that will help you make the ideal smoothie to give your body the nutrients it needs to function properly.

Nourishing, Delicious Smoothie Ingredients

I love the simplicity of making smoothies: just throw all of your ingredients into a blender and whirl! I don’t think there is any perfect ratio of ingredients in smoothies, so I just follow some simple guidelines and don’t worry about measuring the ingredients.

Essential ingredients:

1 to 2 cups of milk kefir, yogurt, sour milk, raw milk, coconut milk, or fresh juice – I usually use yogurt or kefir as the base ingredient, which results in a deliciously tangy, probiotic-filled smoothie. Sometimes I like the smooth creaminess of a raw milk or coconut milk smoothie, too. On special occasions, I will add a bit of fresh-squeezed juice. With my blender, I have to make sure to add the base ingredient first, before adding any frozen ingredients. Otherwise, it will not blend up properly.

1 heaping spoonful of sour cream – It may sound strange, but sour cream is my secret ingredient to make a rich and delicious smoothie. Just add a dollop to the blender any time you are making a smoothie and you will be pleasantly surprised at the great flavor it imparts.

(if you just can’t do the sour cream, leave it out)

2 to 3 cups of frozen fruit – I find that using ice to thicken up a smoothie results in a somewhat watery-tasting smoothie. Use frozen fruit instead and your smoothie will be bursting with flavor.

A pinch of salt – Add a pinch of salt to really bring out the sweet flavors in your smoothie.

1 to 2 bananas or 1 heaping spoonful honey – Ripe bananas make smoothies very creamy and add just the right amount of sweetness. If you don’t have any ripe bananas, add just a spoonful of raw honey (or none at all if the fruit you are using is very sweet).

Tiny splash of flavor extract – Add a flavor such as vanilla extract, orange extract, or almond extract to really add dimension to the flavor of your smoothie.

Optional ingredients:

1 to 2 raw egg yolks or whole eggs – A great way to add some nutrients to smoothies is to add raw egg yolks or whole eggs (if you don’t have any problem digesting raw egg whites).

1 heaping spoonful nut butter – Add nut butter to make a smoothie into a meal. Nut butter pairs well with any berries or bananas.

Splash of whey – Add a splash of raw whey to give your smoothie a probiotic boost.

Last but not least, add some greens. Spinach, Kale, Chard, etc. It’s easy to mask their flavor with fruit!

My Favorite Flavor Combinations

To make a smoothie, just follow the approximate ratios described above. Some of my favorite flavor combinations are:

Tropical – fresh orange juice, pineapple, banana, and frozen strawberries or raspberries

Triple berry – banana, frozen strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries with a dash vanilla, almond, and/or orange extract

Strawberry dream – frozen strawberries, vanilla extract, and almond extract

Strawberry banana – banana, frozen strawberries, vanilla extract, and almond extract

Cherry goodness – frozen cherries, vanilla extract, and almond extract

Orange mango – banana, fresh orange juice and frozen mango

Strawberry delight – fresh orange juice, banana, and frozen strawberries

Strawana peanut butter – banana, frozen strawberry, peanut butter, and vanilla extract

Make it Last by Freezing Some Smoothie!

I’m always looking for ways to save on effort and time spent in the kitchen. So when I make smoothies, I like to make a large amount and freeze some into smoothie popsicles. It also works well to freeze smoothies in mason jars; they should be defrosted for about 24 hours in the fridge and will need a good stirring. These leftover smoothies make a great, easy breakfast.

Preparing for an Interview Full of Brainteaser Questions

Presenting a resume full of skills and accomplishments, along with answering questions like, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” just doesn’t seem to be enough for some interviewers. Asking brainteaser interview questions is a trend that has been emerging in the last few years says John O’Connor, president of a professional career-coaching and branding company in North Carolina. Popular question examples include:

· How many pounds of breakfast cereal are sold in the U.S. every year?

· What are the decimal equivalents of 5/16 and 7/16?

· How many rocks are on the face of the moon?

· How many jellybeans can fit into a gallon jar?

· Why are manhole covers round instead of square?

John says that the purpose of this style of interviewing is to see what candidates are able to walk them through their way of thinking. They are looking for an applicant who will be thrown a curve ball and not freak out.

Hire Up Staffing knows that not all interviews are ideal and we want to prepare all of you job seekers for the curve ball! Here are some tips to help you stay in control of the interview and keep calm when asked these unexpected questions;

Bring tools – Show up to the interview with pens, paper, markers, calculator, stopwatch and ruler to work out a possible brain teaser. It’s unlikely that you’ll be asked, point blank, how many times heavier an elephant is than a mouse and be expected to answer it on the spot. You’ll have time, and depending on the job and the field, what you do on your scratch paper is more important than the conclusion you reach.

Don’t be shocked – A question might surprise you or seem silly given the job for which you’re interviewing, but don’t let it throw you. Again, the answer is usually not the destination. Sometimes the wackiest question deserves an equally wacky process to reach a conclusion, but do take the questions seriously. Don’t assume that it’s being asked to tick you off or make you the butt of a human-resources joke.

Question the question – Show your ability to think through a problem by asking a clarifying question regarding the brain teaser, suggests Paul Bailo, a New York-based recruiter and author of “The Official Phone Interview Handbook.”

“Asking a follow-up question will give your mind a break and buy you time to help you fully understand what is being asked so you don’t solve the wrong problem,” Bailo says.

Speak out your logic – Listen to what you are thinking, Bailo adds. “Sounding out” the process of reaching an answer can help you think through the process in a different way. “Leveraging the logical speaking method will allow for a quicker answer and faster mental processing,” he says. “Think of it as reading a book out loud, only the book you are reading out loud is your mind thinking through a problem.”

See what you are thinking – Just like sounding out a problem can give your brain a productive whack, drawing it out can help you edit and improve your approach.

Practice – You can’t prepare for the exact question unless you’re sure you know what they’ll ask. But you can exercise your mind by reading philosophy books, playing mental games, doing crossword puzzles and thinking about big problems, O’Connor says. “How would you solve the world energy crisis? What would the world do without drinking water? Think of these exercises as a workout for your mind.”

Healthy Proteins Keep You Fit!

People are all over the board when it comes to recommending levels of protein consumption. The truth is, healthy adults (especially men) often don’t need as much protein as they are consuming. In our case however, a healthy appetite for protein is important.Amino acids are hugely important for a multitude of bodily functions. For instance, tryptophan is the direct precursor for the neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates mood and controls of happiness. Serotonin becomes melatonin which is responsible for us getting a good nights sleep, so you can see how small imbalances can create drastic changes in our lives.

Most of the protein found in our processed daily diet comes in the form of soy protein isolate. The soy in this case is stripped of its fiber in an alkaline bath, and then rinsed in acid in aluminum tanks. This acid bath causes the soy to absorb aluminum, which we then ingest. Our patient is most likely a highly toxic person already, and we need to be removing metals from their body, rather than adding any.

We want healthy proteins that our bodies are used to digesting from natural sources. Meats, fish, and eggs provide loads of healthy nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and good sources of healthy fats and enzymes. The other side of that coin, is the fact that many of our commercially raised animals live pretty terrible lives. They live in cramped, filthy pens and cages, often contracting a number of diseases before they are processed for food. To fight this onslaught of disease these animals are fed a steady supply of antibiotics to keep them alive until they have reached their ideal size. These antibiotics stay with the food all the way to the plate, and play a role in the disbiosis of our gut. They speed this process along by giving them hormones to accelerate growth. These hormones alter the growth of our bodies and interfere with our bodies normal functioning. Finally, they are fed a diet of the most unpleasant things you can think of (genetically modified corn, chicken feathers, and much worse) in order to make up for the fact that these animals won’t see a pasture for most of their lives, if ever. These diets create abnormal proteins that have been shown to make labs rats very sick. Cows were not designed to eat corn, let alone the other garbage they are fed.

Most of the fish we see in the markets is farm raised and fed a similar diet to the cows and chickens. Disease is handled with the same antibiotics, and on top of it all, farm raised salmon is fed a pink dye to make them look more appealing in the markets. This dye is a toxic petroleum product and should be avoided.

Now that we have made it through most of the gross stuff, lets talk about what we do want to eat! There are lots of places that still offer traditionally pastured beef, cage free chicken and eggs, and pork from humanely raised pigs. Some beef can be called grass fed because the calves start their lives eating a diet of grass before quickly being moved in with the rest of the heard. You want grass finished beef, without hormones or antibiotics. Some salmon that is advertised to be wild caught is found to be farm raised with a false sticker on the wrapper. Make sure your fish monger or market is a reputable source. You want the good stuff!

Nuts, seeds, and beans are excellent sources of protein, as well as healthy fats (think omega 3), and lots of phytochemicals that your body needs. It is usually easier to find clean sources of vegetarian protein too, so when pastured meat is unavailable, turn to plant sources for a clean, filling meal. Organic beans are cheap and easy to include in a variety or recipes. A handful of raw, unsalted nuts or seeds is a great snack, or can be included in salads and other dishes to add some substance to a light veggie dish!

Ok, now that we know where our protein should come from, you make the decision as to where your protein comes from. You’re the boss!

What's Missing From Your Modern Diet?

Green vegetables are the foods most commonly missing in modern diets. Learning to incorporate dark, leafy greens into the diet is essential to establishing a healthy body and immune system. When you nourish yourself with greens, you may naturally crowd out the foods that make you sick.

Greens help build your internal rainforest and strengthen the blood and respiratory system. Leafy green vegetables are also high-alkaline foods which may be beneficial to people exposed to higher amounts of pollution in urban areas. The alkaline minerals in our bodies are used to neutralize acidic conditions caused by the environment. Green vegetables will help to replenish our alkaline mineral stores and continue to filter out pollutants1. Green is associated with spring, the time of renewal, refreshment and vital energy. In Traditional Chinese medicine, green is related to the liver, emotional stability and creativity.

Nutritionally, greens are very high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and vitamins A, C, E and K. They are loaded with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micronutrients and phytochemicals. Although choosing organic is recommended, eating non-organic greens is still preferable to not eating any greens at all! Some of the proven and possible benefits of consuming dark leafy greens are:

o Blood purification

o Cancer prevention

o Improved circulation

o Strengthened immune system

o Promotion of healthy intestinal flora

o Promotion of subtle, light and flexible energy

o Improved liver, gall bladder and kidney function

o Cleared congestion, especially in lungs by reducing mucus

There are a wide variety of greens to choose from, so try to find options that you will enjoy and eat often. If you get bored with your favorites, be adventurous and explore new greens that you’ve never tried before. Broccoli is one option which is very popular among adults and children. Also try to include bok choy, napa cabbage, kale, collards, watercress, mustard greens, broccoli rabe, dandelion and other dark, leafy greens. Green cabbage is great cooked or raw, or in the form of sauerkraut. Arugula, endive, chicory, lettuce, mesclun and wild greens are generally eaten raw, but can be consumed in any creative way you enjoy. Spinach, Swiss chard and beet greens are best eaten in moderation because they are high in oxalic acid, which inhibits the absorption of the calcium these foods contain2. However, rotating between a variety of green vegetables shouldn’t cause any nutritional consequences in regards to calcium3.

Cooking Greens

Try a variety of methods like steaming, boiling, sautéing in oil, water sautéing, waterless cooking or lightly pickling (as in a pressed salad). Boiling helps greens plump and relax. Boil for under a minute so that nutrients do not get lost in the water. You can also drink the cooking water as a health-giving broth or tea if you’re using organic greens. Steaming makes greens more fibrous and tight, which helps you feel fuller, longer. This is a great method to help curb your appetite for those trying to lose weight4. Raw salad is also a wonderful preparation for greens. It’s refreshing, cooling and supplies live enzymes.

Temp Employment Is Taking Over

Since the recession in 2008, the industry that has added the most jobs in the U.S. is temporary help services. Out of the 5.7 million new jobs added, 15% of all job growth nationally is due to the hiring of temp workers. In larger cities, a much higher percentage of job growth can be credited to the temp sector.

These are some of the large cities where temp work takes up a significant portion of new jobs added:

65% in Cincinnati

51% in Milwaukee

46% in Kansas City

More than 40% in Chicago & Philadelphia

Is it a good thing that growth in dozens of large cities has been dominated by temp help?

We think that in most cases, temporary employees are a smart option for your company and the economy. Below is a graph that shows the increased share of job growth with temporary help services. It is astonishing how many temp jobs are being offered in comparison to the over all total.

Temporary help services are becoming a convenient alternative to direct hire employees and is definitely worth considering.

The benefits: There are an abundance of benefits that come along with going through an agency like Hire Up Staffing:

1. Expertise Staffing agencies often have a level of expertise that far exceeds the human resources departments in most small businesses. The agencies are more in tune with employment trends, law changes, and recruitment practices because this is their core business.

2. Better Talent Pool Many smaller employers cannot compete with the larger businesses when it comes to pay, benefits, and recruitment tactics. As a result, they are left out of consideration by top performing talent. Staffing companies bridge the gap by leveraging their larger buying power and transferring those benefits to their clients.

3. Cost Savings Using a staffing agency is a cost effective option for certain processes and positions within your company. Your cost savings will be realized by:

* Efficiency: Recruiting, screening and hiring a candidate takes a lot of time. Delegating these tasks to an expert will reduce the amount of time and expenses you spend on the hiring process. Hiring a staffing agency will also allow you to on board your new team member quickly and reduce down time.

* Advertising dollars: Recruiting for top talent takes an investment in advertising dollars to reach your talent pool. Staffing companies have already set aside advertising dollars for recruiting and are already reaching the talent you need. You can leverage their dollars and save yours.

* Convert Fixed Costs to Variable Costs: For some positions in your company you could save money by converting your “Fixed Employee Cost” to Variable Employee Cost” for example, if your business has very little room for overhead costs but you still need employees to respond to customer orders. You could use a staffing agency only when you had orders to fill. Even though you pay a markup on the hourly rate you wouldn’t have to carry the fixed employee costs when you didn’t have the work.

4. Reduce Risk When you engage the services of a staffing agency, you get the talent but not the HR overhead. The employee reports to you but you have no liability for workman’s comp, payroll taxes and unemployment claims. Hiring a staffing agency employee is also a better protection than hiring an independent contractor especially if that independent contractor is a one-man show.

5. Flexibility Larger companies are already taking advantage of using contingent workforce to ramp up or down. As a small business owner you can use the agency’s employees as much or little as you need and have the flexibility to discontinue them once your work is complete. During slower times of the year you can downsize without going through painful layoffs. During busy times you will have access to great workers who can fill a vacancy in a matter of days.

How Important Is A College Degree? Here Are the Facts.

Have you noticed a difference in the requirements for some job openings these days?

Seems like things have changed a lot over the past few years. A High School Diploma or GED is commonly an absolute must, but now an Associate’s and even a Bachelor’s Degree is becoming desired and even sometimes mandatory for entry level positions. College or higher education & training is starting to look more like a necessity over time.

Studies have shown that 32% of Human Resource Professionals said that they hire more employees with college degrees for positions normally performed by staff members with only high school diplomas.

The following percentages are to show the different industries that are more likely to hire an employee with a degree over one without for lower level positions:

  • Financial Services – 53%
  • Health Care – 40%
  • Manufacturing – 38%
  • Transportation & Utilities – 37%
  • Information Technology – 33%
  • Professional & Business Services – 31%
  • Retail – 28%
  • Hospitality – 20%

Over all, More than 54% of employers reported that they require an associate’s degree or higher for their positions; and 44% require a four-year degree or higher.

Approximately 18% of employers said they have increased their educational requirements for jobs over the past five years.

It seems that the trend may be becoming a lot more popular due to a very competitive job market, which is causing many college graduates to accept jobs below their skill level.

The positive effects of hiring college graduates:

Most employers who have hired more workers with college degrees for jobs historically held by high school graduates reported positive effects on their business effects, like:

  • 64% Noticed a higher quality of work
  • 45% Increased productivity
  • 22% Increased revenue
  • 18% Customer loyalty

What do you think the best way to screen outside candidates for a job is?

Bachelor’s Degree?
Associates Degree?
Some higher education?
Mostly just job Experience?
High School Diploma?
