The holiday season is known for added hustle and bustle which is why some job seekers opt to sit the holidays out and refocus their efforts after the new year. While this plan may work for some, others find it opens additional opportunities for them within a less competitive job market. If you are open to continuing your search during the holidays, you may soon find yourself on a Hiring Manager’s NICE List. Want some tips for how to get there? Read along…

Be Consistent: Create a job search schedule/routine and stick with it. Make a goal for yourself that you will devote x number of hours looking and applying each day/each week. Consistency is one of the best ways to strengthen your own personal discipline. It proves to yourself that you can show up for YOU, which builds self-confidence. Consistency with job seeking is good for your own personal growth and self-esteem. Showing up for yourself each day in this way builds momentum for change.

Be Strategic with your Resources: Create multiple cover letters tailored to specific job functions. Your resume and cover letters should not just be one size to fit all jobs. If you are applying for more than one type of job, you want your cover letter and resume to reflect how your experience aligns with the specific needs of each role for which you are applying.

Take Time to Review and Adjust your Resume: Like the bullet above, you want to be sure you are keeping an eye on what you are sending out as an extension of your professional self and overall experience. You may want to reprioritize bullet points or adjust some of the wording to better underscore how your past work tracks with that required of a particular posted position.

Connect with Others: Volunteer and give back; network with likeminded professionals. There are plenty of ways to do this. You can start small by building connections online through sites like LinkedIn. You can join a professional organization, attend a local business breakfast, or volunteer for a cause that means something to you. By broadening your social scope, you open doors to even more likeminded people and other personal and professional opportunities.

Stay Open and Be Patient: Research a list of potential employers of interest and submit your resume even if they do not have a position posted. You never know if a recruiter is aware of a position that will be opening soon that is in line with your experience.

Stay Positive and Flexible: Hiring during the holidays can be a bit challenging for businesses as they are often juggling competing priorities. You may find your new employer requires a somewhat flexible start date based upon increasing business needs, so be flexible too.

Pro Tip: Remember, if you are looking for a permanent position and your search presents some Seasonal Jobs-try not to rule them out automatically. While the name itself may sound temporary, we have found that companies often use the seasonal period to serve as a trial run for some of their positions. Many employers may consider keeping a Seasonal employee who demonstrated excellent work habits, strong attendance, and a great attitude.

If you are looking for a job and are open to working during the holidays, the tips above will help you. If you find you could use additional support, then simply enlist the professionals, and call us! Whether you are looking for a great job opportunity or a top-notch employee, we can help!
